REAR GARDEN, BRIGHTON
A converted bungalow on top of a hill with a view to die for, but sadly a very steep slope at the rear ruined by the builders. Five levels were created as rooms, cascading away from the property and each with their own purpose. A terrace, lawn, table tennis area, pergola with fire pit and large pond with potting shed and deck make up the various sections of the garden.
The aspect really does have a magnificent amount of sky and a direct view of the South Downs, however, it is exposed and the wind whips through without mercy. Densely planted borders help buffer the wind and as you walk down the garden, the hidden areas reveal themselves with dramatic effect.
Despite the complex nature of the design and having to work on a fairly steep slope, it's actually quite low maintenance. Tropical plants are mixed with mediterranean standards and when the sun shines it feels more like a villa in the hills that could be anywhere in the world.
